Lionel Messi has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor, by President Joe Biden.
This prestigious award recognizes Messi’s remarkable contributions to the world of sports, as well as his philanthropic efforts, particularly through the Leo Messi Foundation and his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Messi is the first male soccer player to receive this honor, and the first Argentine to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
He joins an impressive list of recipients, including Hillary Clinton, Magic Johnson, José Andrés, Bono, and Denzel Washington.
The White House highlighted Messi’s successful football career and his contributions to global health and education programs.
Through his foundation, Messi has funded educational and healthcare projects in countries like Argentina, Spain, Syria, and Bangladesh, and has also worked to promote children’s rights and inclusion.
Unfortunately, Messi was unable to attend the award ceremony due to a scheduling conflict.
However, he expressed his gratitude and deep honor at receiving this recognition, and hopes to meet with President Biden in the near future.
