Newcastle United secured a stunning 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final at the Emirates Stadium.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the 37th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box after Jacob Murphy’s attempt was blocked.
Anthony Gordon doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 51st minute, tapping in the rebound after David Raya parried Alexander Isak’s shot.
This win puts Newcastle in a commanding position ahead of the second leg at St James’ Park on February 5.
Arsenal had several chances, but failed to capitalize on them. Gabriel Martinelli’s shot hit the post, and Kai Havertz missed a close-range opportunity.
Mikel Arteta’s side will need to improve significantly to overturn this deficit and keep their cup hopes alive.
This victory marks Newcastle’s sixth consecutive win in all competitions, with Alexander Isak scoring his 50th goal for the club across all competitions since joining in August 2022.
